About the Artists & Speakers
Katya Balen is a children's writer from London. She has worked in special schools, for social care, and in children's hospices. Her first book, The Space We're In, was Highly Commended for the Branford Boase, and her second book won the 2022 Carnegie Medal and Shadowers' Choice, the UKLA award and was Highly Commended for the Wainwright Prize. Her third novel, The Light in Everything was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and won the 2023 UKLA award. She has recently written a new series for younger readers - The Thames and Tide Club - about a group of magical mudlarks. She lives with her partner and their naughty whippet, Mouse.
