About the Artists & Speakers

Jeffrey presents BBC Radio 4’s 'Add To Playlist' with co-host Cerys Matthews. He is an author, broadcaster and educator with a particular interest in issues surrounding race, masculinity, education and popular culture. Jeffrey taught English to 11- to 18-year-olds for 15 years and now provides training for schools, universities and businesses on race, identity, masculinity and education. He is also Senior Teaching Fellow at Manchester Institute for Education.

Jeffrey’s published books include: Hold Tight: Black Masculinity, Millennials and the Meaning of Grime; Black Listed: Black British Culture Explored; What is Masculinity? Why Does it Matter? And Other Big Questions (co-authored); Musical Truth: A Musical History of Modern Black Britain in 28 Songs; and I Heard What You Said.

Sophie is director and business manager at Jeffrey Boakye Ltd, working with Jeffrey Boakye to provide author sessions and staff training for schools, universities and businesses on issues surrounding race, masculinity, education and popular culture. She has a particular interest in representation and diversity in literature for children and adults.

In her managerial role, Sophie liaises with contacts within UK publishing, including marketing and publicity, with schools, independent bookshops, libraries and businesses.

An avid reader for herself and with her two sons, Sophie is interested in ensuring books that are representative of marginalised communities are accessed by children and families of all backgrounds. She encourages her sons to read widely and review the books they love to help other families find new books and has supported her sons’ school to improve their selection of books for EYFS.

Sophie also co-runs @TheMixedFamilyConversation, a UK-based community on Instagram for mixed heritage families, sharing resources, experiences, troubleshooting problems & arranging meet-ups. She is also Secretary of her local school PTA.

Sophie has previously worked in social innovation and community engagement to address social inequality.
