About the Artists & Speakers
Gabby Dawnay is an experienced children’s writer, screenwriter and occasional illustrator. She’s
written numerous award-winning picture books with long-time collaborator and illustrator Alex Barrow, including the popular If I had… series. If I Had A Crocodile has just been nominated for the Yoto/Carnegie Medal 2024. All books from the series are published by Thames & Hudson.
Non-fiction includes: 5 Minute Nature Stories and the follow-up, 5 Minute Human
Body Stories, published by Magic Cat. She also wrote Round and Round Goes
Mother Nature published by Wide Eyed Editions, which features 48 lifecycles
ranging from microscopic creatures to stars. Other titles include two anthologies of
forty short stories and poems, A Treasury of Tales for four and five year olds, both
illustrated by Heidi Griffiths and published by Frances Lincoln.
Gabby lives in South London with two whippets, an occasional cat and
boomeranging children.
Alex Barrow grew up in the suburbs of London to Filipino and English Parents before moving to South London to study illustration at Central Saint Martins. Today, Alex is a regular contributor and an Art Director for popular science and arts themed children's magazine OKIDO magazine His first book for children, A Possum's Tail, was published in 2014 and was quickly nominated for the 2015 Cilip Kate Greenaway Medal. his latest books with award winning writer and poet Gabby Dawnay are a series If I had a pet - the first was If I had a Dinosaur which won the "made for moms" Silver award, and was read on Cbeebies 'bedtime stories' by Eddie Redmayne. the second book If I Had a Sleepy Sloth was also read on Cbeebies bedtime stories by David Schwimmer. In his spare time, Alex plays accordion in his band MALPHINO!
